The council has a duty to set up and maintain the committee to consider all appeals against the refusal of school placing requests or exclusions from schools.  The committee is made up of three members comprising a West Lothian councillor, a person considered to have expertise in education (usually a retired head or depute head teacher) and a parent of a child in education at a school in West Lothian.  Meetings are held as an when appeals are received, with a higher number taking place in June each year when the number of appeals increases substantially for places in schools with a greater number of applications than places available.

The council is looking to expand the list of committee members and is welcoming applications from prospective applicants.
