The major project to re-build a significant proportion of the school is on track for completion in Spring 2026, after over 60% of the school had to be demolished due to issues with Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC).
With a live construction site on their doorstep, St Kentigern's have worked with main contractor Heron Bros to help pupils gain hands-on experience in a variety of construction trades.
This has allowed pupils to observe and engage with the real-life construction process happening right on their doorstep, learning above and beyond what they could learn in the classroom.
This has helped pupils who have expressed an interest in learning about a range of aspects of the construction industry.
St Kentigern's Headteacher Gerry Burns said: "Having a real-life construction project on our doorstep has provided some fantastic opportunities for our pupils.
"Working with skilled professionals from Heron Bros, the pupils have gained first-hand knowledge of different roles within the construction industry, such as joinery, architecture and project management.
"Being able to offer our students a real hands-on learning experience will help prepare them for a range of career opportunities using vital skills, such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and attention to detail.
"As the construction project nears completion in Spring 2026, it's clear that the pupils who have participated in this programme will leave with a sense of pride, having helped to shape both the school's future and their own."
Once completed, the new wing will feature a reception area, spacious canteen and dining area, a four-court Games Hall, Dance Studio, Fitness Suite and a changing village. Additional facilities will include a performance area, a range of learning spaces, a café and nurture rooms, all designed to enhance the learning environment for all of the young people who attend the school.
The work has been completed while the school is operational, with every effort made to keep disruption to a minimum and maintain high-quality during construction.
Contractor Heron Bros is undertaking the construction work on behalf of the council and development partner, Hub South East.
