Silver trophy winning team from The James Young High School

Organised by the Scottish Mathematical Council, the fiercely contested competition saw the best young Maths students from 52 schools across the state and private sector in Scotland come together after success in their regional heats.

The James Young High School team of Parvana, Matthew, Jonathan and Maeve worked quickly and strategically to solve very challenging mathematical problems to secure the second- place finish.  They were only narrowly pipped to the top position by Stewart Melville College in Edinburgh and finishing ahead of St Leonard's School in St. Andrews and Edinburgh's Fettes College.

The James Young High School Headteacher Tricia Gallagher said: "This outstanding achievement reflects the hard work and dedication of our pupils and staff.

"This is the first time our team has made the finals, so for Parvana, Matthew, Jonathan and Maeve to confidently face seasoned competitors, such as those from the top performing private schools in Scotland, to claim second place is phenomenal.

"Aspiration and Success are two of our key school values and our young people are inspiring examples of this in action."

West Lothian's Executive councillor for education Andrew McGuire added: "Huge congratulations to The James Young High School team on this incredible achievement.

"The James Young High School were the only state school in the top four, so Parvana, Matthew, Jonathan and Maeve and all the school staff who supported them can by rightly proud of what they have accomplished."
