The Scottish Government have issued a consultation on proposals to introduce legislation restricting the use of mobile phones in Scotland's schools.
This consultation seeks views and opinions on the extent and scope of restrictions on mobile phones in schools, the impact of restricting use of mobile phones in schools, and what exemptions should apply to restrictions on mobile phones in schools.
Education Executive have been asked to approve a response to the Scottish Government consultation at their meeting on Tuesday 10 November.
The proposed response is based on the outcome of the council's own recent consultation with local pupils, parents, school staff and trade unions on the same issue.
The council undertook extensive consultation and engagement on mobile phone use in schools from January to April 2026 across the authority.
These views indicated broad support for proportionate restrictions on mobile phone use in schools, as well as highlighting the importance of appropriate exemptions, effective communication with families and continued investment in digital infrastructure to support inclusion and access to learning.
